The Department of Advertising & Public Relations at UGA

Our department prepares students to be creative problem solvers, writers, managers, policy and communication decision makers, media planners and analysts in the fields of mass communication, advertising and public relations. This program emphasizes persuasive communication skills in traditional and new media that are essential for effective communication in the 21st century. The undergraduate program offers majors in both advertising and public relations.

The Grady ADPR Department is a Top-5 nationally-ranked program. Award-winning teachers and nationally recognized researchers teach classes in the department. In addition to a core program of required skills, management, design and writing courses, ADPR majors can choose from an array of special topics classes in such areas as social media, political advertising, fundraising, advertising and consumer psychology, sex in advertising, international advertising and Latin-American telenovelas due to the varied expertise of the faculty.

Exciting Times in Advertising and Public Relations

What an exciting time to be studying advertising and public relations! The media underpinning our practice are in the midst of the digital revolution. Social media and emerging technology are changing the way we connect with customers and stakeholders. And people are using their phones to play games, watch video, and check in. Times like these offer young professionals amazing opportunities to quickly make a difference.

The ADPR Department at UGA is poised to help you make the most of those opportunities. We offer specialized classes in social media and digital advertising. Our courses are infused with new media examples, assignments, and cases. Many of our students also earn a certificate from the Grady College’s cutting-edge New Media Institute. With that said, our students gain a solid foundation in our fields through core courses in management, research, media, law and ethics, graphics, and message strategy among others.

The Grady College offers two graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in Journalism & Mass Communication (M.A.) and the Ph.D. in Mass Communication (Ph.D.). Certificate in Applied Politics and Public Affairs Communications


AdPR announces an an interdisciplinary program of Grady College and SPIA, combining the fast-paced field of public affairs communications with the rewarding field of politics. This program is funded with support from one of the country’s top public affairs strategists, Carolyn Caudell Tieger (ABJ ’69). Online Certificate Course

Using Social Media to Build Business

The UGA Georgia Center for Continuing Education offers an online certificate course entitled Using Social Media to Build Business, which was developed by faculty of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. Self-paced and self-taught, the 44-hour course is targeted for anyone who seeks in-depth, practical knowledge and actionable ideas about using social media effectively to win business. The Public Relations Society of America is a supporting partner of the course.
